Project description

Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 built by Coinbase. Since its launch in 2023, it's grown into one of the fastest, cheapest, and most accessible blockchains in the world. When the team launched Base, the logo was a circle. It was a simple starting point and served as a solid foundation. But as the ecosystem grew and the community grew with it, the Base team realized that the brand didn't capture everything they were building. In response, the Base brand team harnessed a new visual system built to signal both its utility and creativity inspired by the freedom of building onchain: a new symbol derived from Coinbase, a vibrant and flexible color palette, a custom typeface designed for clarity and expression, and image treatments influenced by the work of Karel Martens. The Base team approached us knowing a system this expansive needed a stage to sing—a launch moment that could unify its elements and inspire upon debut. Through motion, we developed a film to meet the moment—one where the components don’t just appear in isolation; they move in relation to one another, shifting from interface to abstraction, from the smallest mark to the largest field of color. Structured as a continual zoom and inspired by Eames’ Powers of Ten, the narrative explores scale as a metaphor for possibility, revealing how clarity at the micro level can unlock creativity at the macro. By animating the system into a living, breathing sequence, the video becomes the connective tissue of the rebrand—transforming static design into an open invitation for developers, communities, and creators to build what they believe in.
